Brass jam pans
« on: January 31, 2011, 22:54 »
I've just spent several long hours cleaning Granny's brass jam pan !
The question I would like to ask is: would using it for acidic preserves such as chutney damage the pan/impart any flavour to the chutney or do I go out and buy the OH the big stainless steel one she secretly wants for her birthday
Thanks
It's all good in da wood

I'd buy her the one she secretly wants! Copper, aluminium and cast iron can react to the vinegar in chutneys and leave an unpleasant metallic taste to the final product.

So don't use it for chutneys, but would it be o.k for jam?
Otherwise it's going on ebay, I couldn't face polishing it again !
Thanks

I bought a huge maslin pan - stainless steel - last year from Amazon - I absolutely love it. Has safe carrying and pouring handles, lip, etc. ALso got stainless funnel. Lovely
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

If it was me, I'd stick it on Ebay and use the money to buy her a stainless steel maslin pan, but not for her birthday!  Birthday's should be personal, and jam is for every day!

Before you put it on ebay, best just to double check it doesn't have any sentimental attachments nevertheless  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It's O.K it wasn't our Grannies it was just A grannies- we got it from a bootsale years ago!
The jam pan is just a minor pressie, the main pressie is the bee-keeping kit (but keep schtum- don't tell her !)

I still have and use 'me mam's  brass jam pan.  She used it for everything and I have done the same.  It is over a hundred years old and I've never tasted any off flavours of any of  the things that have come out of there.    Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
