FIRST EGG LAID TODAY!!
« on: October 09, 2010, 11:14 »
one of my 20 wk old lohmann brown pullets laid its first egg today! Omg i am overjoyed however should eggs be kept in the fridge or not? I ask because in the supermarket they are not in the fridge -i suppose being in a fridge keeps them fresher although some people keep their eggs in those pottery chicken egg holders or eggskelters i just wondered thats all and would welcome your advice
regards Patricia

Congratulations Looe Looe Belle, How are you going to cook it ? :).  I tend not to keep mine in the fridge.  I don't think they need the temperature to keep fresh unless they are cracked.  I have an egg holder (plus extra egg boxes if they are laying well) on the side in the kitchen.

Sorry, whats this keep thing you are on about, mine get eaten now before they lay they are that good  :D

We do keep our in the fridge too, coz wifey insisted on a big fridge so we need to fill it. I dont think it matters too much as if you are like us they are eaten within a couple of days anyway.

I prefer to keep them at room temperature. However as Aidy says the hens will barely have the chance to lay them before you or your friends/family/lady next door gets to them.

I have a helter skelter thingy for the eggs but some are too small and others get stuck as they are too big so not really a great design. I also have cockerels running with my girls so all eggs now are kept in the fridge.
Staffies are softer than you think.
