Hi,

Is THIS sort of thing any good? They seem to have a number of outlets in Warwickshire and more powerful rotovators if you need. :)

If you can get together with a few others and hire for the week,it may be the cheapest option especially if you need a "Big un" :)

Just a warning re weeds - you don't say it's overgrown land but if you have perennial weeds such as bindweed, couch grass, ground elder etc then get them out before rotavating .......
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I hired a fairly large rotavator recently to 'do' the front garden of the bungalow that my parents had moved in to. The garden was very overgrown & quite compacted,  heavy soil, & so probably not unlike your allotment if its not been dug.

At around 80 square metres, it is somewhat smaller than a standard size plot, but it cost around £90 for the hire (including delivery & collection), took us a fair chunk of the day to get it down to a reasonably fine tilth, and was damned hard work managing such a large, heavy machine that wanted to go everywhere other than where we wanted it to go.

More recently I've used a much smaller Mountfield on my plot that I got from Freecycle, does an equally good job with much less effort. I'm not suggesting you'll find one on Freecycle, but you could buy a decent, older machine on Fleabay for not much more than the cost of hire, use it at your leisure (not tied down to the time constraints on a hired machine) and have it for future seasons as well.

Just a thought  ;)
