Strawberry Plants
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:43 »
This is my 1st year growing, I have planted lots of runners from my Strawberry ready for next year, what is the best way to make sure plants survive throughout the winter, should I plant direct into the bed or keep in pots under a fleece?

Any help appreciated!

Strawberry plants are very hardy and will be fine planted direct in the bed. I would get them in now so they have a few weeks to spread their roots. I did the same last year and they survived through the winter and as you know it was a cold one.

No - see Fisherman's post. They are very hardy.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

First year I cut off any runners to keep the plants strong but this year I have taken some and cut off others.
Only problem is finding room for them because the original plants should crop well again for at least another year! AND I'll take some runners next year!
AND I bought some Albion which are in big pots at the moment.
Looks like another strawberry bed is needed!!!
I NEED MORE SPACE!!

If your Albion plants perform anything like the single one I bought last year you will potentially need a LOT more space!

It's produced about 2 dozen new plants this year and two crops of large strawberries (had some yesterday evening with blueberries, raspberries and Cornish clotted ice cream. Yum!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Good to hear strabs are ok in not so sunny sheffield JayG. I have ordered some from T&M this year, hope they arrive soon. How many did you start with to produce 2 dozen new plants?

One! (An impulse buy from Ludlow market about this time last year.)

It goes against some of the advice about not allowing the plants to do too much in their first year but it was so willing it seemed a shame to restrict it in any way!

Oh! I just ordered 20 with 10 free so might be flooded with extra plants! Better get the jam pan ready then.
