what is wrong with my hens
« on: September 04, 2010, 16:02 »
i have recently got new hens from a lady who did not want them anymore and since i recieve them 3 have died with vet not knowing what was wrong(she is new to poultry) one came to me with a very bad lice problem and a couple more had lice which i have nearly got rid of the chicken with a bad problem had to have a lot of feathers cut right down but this hen also has an eye with discharge, it a a very strange looking hen meant to be a silver laced faverolle but does not look like a hen at all more like cross between chicken and turkey, i am bit concerned about losing others now, they are running about eating and drinking seem healthy enough, the 3 i lost were 2 Rhode island red and a buff orpington, i have 1 buff orpinton, 1 faverolle, 2 pekins(baby), 1 silkie cockerell, 1 hybrid hen, 1 hybid cockerell and the faverolles x (unsure breed) left and i dont no if any of these are at risk. They do have alot of loss droppings. would anyone no the problem so i can treat it before anymore die, thanks in advance, sorry its a long post.........

I would try and find a vet who has good knowledge of or specialises in poultry. Sounds like your hen which has an eye discharge needs a course of antibiotics. I would try and segregate this hen from the others until its back in full health and the same with any of the others that show any symptons of ill health. Have they all been wormed? If not I would do so straight away as a bad case of worms won't do them any good.

Good luck

Normal chicken poohs come in all shapes, sizes and consistencies - see here:-

I presume you have treated the hens with frontline or similar to get rid of the lice and mites? If necessary treat again in case you missed some. Treat your coop in case they have infected that as well. Worm them all with flubenvet just to make sure things are OK. Get some antibiotics for the discharge (the vet may want to take a swab and get this tested) and you could try eye ointment for the hen too.
Finally how old are the chickens?
Staffies are softer than you think.

hi yes they have been treated for lice and mites and one chicken had to have half her feathers cut right down as she was badly infested, she still lays egg much to my suprise, they are being wormed at moment and i am unaware of age the lady is meant to be a breeder but i am starting to douct as in the boxes they came with they had strange looking pellets she gave them for food, look liked rabbit nuggets not layers at all, i never collect the hens that was my partner and she said we had a day to return them which was not good as i could not check then over properly till they settle in, i have keep hens in the past and never had any problems but these hens seem to bring all sorts of problems with them like i say i have loss 3 already, age i am unsure about though, 2 are probably about 1 from size and behaviour both egg layers and one is around 1 is 6 months not laying yet and two young hens around 16 weeks but very small still, not laying, i have 2 hybrids of around 22 weeks approx one being a hen not laying and 1 cockerell then 1 silkie cockerell around 22weeks approx crowing crack of dawn and acting very frisky but no probs with him, what would you suggest apart from antibiotics as cant deal with losing another, been 3 weeks since last loss and lost 3 within a week, thanks
