I place 2 foot square pieces of corrugated iron in grassy areas to attract grass snakes, but have never, ever seen a slow worm (despite having 7 black plastic composters, 7 corrugated iron compost bays, 1 tyre composter, 1 plastic slat composter, 1 weldmesh composter and a couple of 'grab bag' auxillary compost bins).

no offence against Bucks but I think slow worms may be choosy about the areas of the country they like to inhabit!

...saying that though, I've never come across one in my garden which is only 7 mins cylcle from the lottie...

My mum used to have a lot of slow worms in here garden untill she cut most of it back.

We still see them every so often, and she has left a bit down the bottom for them  :D

Haven't come across any in the allotment yet though,  I think it's a bit exposed there for them.

I rescued a slow worm before rotovating yesterday, which I'm well pleased about. It was very pale, almost cream in colour. The last one I saw before that was green. How many species are there?

We have loads. They like it under cardboard or carpet if you put that down to exclude weeds. Be careful if strimming - its easy to chop them in pieces (very bad). They can live 20-30 years - the big ones get to be at least 40cm long. Also males are greyish and females are bigger and brownish. In our plot they seem to like ant hills, not sure why - maybe the aeration?
