Rotten shallots
« on: August 09, 2010, 16:09 »
I have grown a few shallots. Most are lovely but som have a rotten brown layer or centre and small awful when peeled. Have I left them in the ground too long before harvesting?

I lost a few of mine as well as some of the overwintered onions but overall my crop has been good. The thing to do is make sure you sort out any rotten or poor quality ones before you store them otherwise they will affect the others.

Did some of them go to seed, the rotten bit could be the seed stem rotting, pick out the ones that went to seed and use first.
