Noticed some of the Garlic stems had gone a funny colour so pulled a few last night. They all looked garlic shaped but the bulbs were all very soft and rotten. Got lots of other heathly green shoots on other plants, pulled them and they are fine. Just wondering why some are rotten and some healthy. Its my first propoer year with the plot because when I got it last year it was to late in the year really to anything with it. Got good results with other plants but the Garlic just seem a bit poor.

Did they have any mould at the base of the bulbs - or black dots there?

I've found that late maturing garlic are not suited on my plot as I often get rot (not white rot) just as described.  I think it's when the bulb is getting bigger and then it rains - the base of the bulb is sitting on wet heavy clay which is slow to dry off, and with it being warm and humid at this time of year, encourages anything in the soil to take advantage.  I plant my garlic in raised beds with added sharp sand, and also on ridges which seems to help with drainage but I still get problems.  Early maturing garlic on the other hand seem to do well with very few losses so I'll be dropping lates for earlies now

When I think about it now the un healthy stems had black dots all up and down the stems. The stems themselves where "greyish" in colour. Can't recall any dots on the base but definately on the stems. The end of the plot where they are is quite clat ridden, maybe I should plant them in a different position next time. Funny thing is though I have lots of healthy plants as well.

You may have a touch of white rot in that bed, just try them somewhere else and see what happens

do people grow garlic and onions on all the plots? are the onions ok?
