Assault on Plot 69B
« on: August 01, 2010, 16:54 »
This year I decided to cage my brassicas with debris netting to keep out a). Cabbage Whites and b). whitefly/aphids.

Only 1 butterfly has got through  so far :D but I have just got back from a week away and my brussels, broccoli and swedes have been absolutely decimated by the aphids >:(

It seems that not only does the debris net keep them in and the predators out it actually makes it a nice environent for them to multiply at a rate of knots.

I am thinking of re-sowing the brussels, broccoli and swedes again but I need to know...

1. Is it too late in the year?

2. Is it OK to put them where the damaged plants are now (I dont have a lot of spare ground to put them elsewhere)

3. Would cutting away the infected foliage and spraying help the plants to survive.

4. How are other people dealing with the little .......things!

Just spray them ...........provado ultimate bug killer is ok for use on brassicas, or use an insecticidal soap spray.

Debris netting does have a line of larger holes in it.  Could the  pests have come in through them?

Have to agree with the Provado Ultimate spray.  I use it judiciously and never if the plant would crop within two weeks.
