I am a new girl, have taken to growing veg big time this year and my brassicas seem to be doing too well. I didn't expect to have purple sprouting broccoli now?!
They are all fighting the good fight against snails etc. but yesterday i see purple sprouting!!!
can this be right? or should I give up as it has all broken too soon?

Hi Polly & welcome - love the username.

PSB should not be sprouting now - Feb/Mar is the correct time although sometimes a spear or two in late autumn has been known.

Maybe they were severly stressed?
Maybe the wrong seed in the packet??

There is one variety (maybe more) of early purple sprouting which doesn't need a cold spell to mature - see 'Bordeaux' variety at http://www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk/acatalog/52_broccoli.html
I grew this last year but despite netting it was demolished by the cabbage whites so I'm back to the cold weather variety this year.

Digger, you angel!
Perhaps there is hope for me yet?
Do I pick the sprouting off now or wait?! and if the answer is wait; what for?

Polly - if it's sprouting now, I guess it's asking to be eaten. Get there before the cabbage whites!

I am trying a variety called Spike this year for the first time, allegedly it does not need a cold spell. They are monster plants but no sign of spears so far.

Thank you all for your comments....this is a lesson for me to learn quickly, after various suggestions kindly supplied by you all I dug out the packet of seeds to establish the name and hey presto all is revealed..Mr Fothergill's Summer Purple to be harvested June to October. You see if I had looked at the packet before panicking, I wouldn't have had to trouble you kind folk. New girls eh? what are we like?

Now, about Cauliflowers hearts turning purple around the edges.............??
Sorry i wasted everyone's time
