Help! Fly strike!
« on: July 21, 2009, 20:55 »
Tonight I managed to get hold of Tach and discovred the problem with his mucky bum... fly strike  :(

I don't know how it started, a peck injury or something, but there was a large area of necrotic tissue (about 3ins by 1.5ins) from just beside his vent right around one thigh.  In the deeper pockets lots of maggots were feasting away.

I stuck him in the sink and washed him down, and he is now currently back int eh spare room in a box with a heat lamp.

Once cleaned, the flesh below the necrosis looks pink and healthy.

He looks perky enough at the moment, though obviously very quiet to allow me to pick him up and carry him around.

I don't think euthanasia is on the ards at the moment, but i really don't know how to handle this at all.  Would peroxide help to clean the tissue?  There doesn't look to be any active infection at the moment.

I absolutely stink right now!

Strangley enough I think the maggots will have cleaned it up really well for you anyway, however I would get some antiseptic spray to put on him. If you have any anti-biotics try giving him a course of that as well. Keep the area clean and as dry as possible. Think he will be ok  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

I don't know if this is ok for poultry but it only gives a warning about aquatic animals.

Doesn't seem expensive either. :)

Hope Tach recovers ok.

Fly strike dosen`t need a wound to start, the mucky feathers (or wool in the case of sheep) is what the fly eggs are laid on. The maggots then move on to the flesh.
Makes me cringe when i see it and i`m an angler used to maggots. :(

Hey there
i know i always harp on about tea tree but one drop in some warm water bathed on the affeced area should help with the healing as it's antiseptic and will deter flies and other insects too - and it's natural!

like 8doubles says, fly strike and sheep remember it well, yes they eat flesh and keep eating if not stopped I cringe at the thought. We use to use Jeye's fluid diluted and wash the bums of sheep ( my job) the jeyes keept the flies away and burnt the maggots. good for healing.
to stop the hens pecking at it you could try Vicks vapor rub it also helps healing and hens dont like the taste of it.

We've had fly strike in our livestock I've wadsed in warm salt water which gets the maggots running - then a weak solution of Iodine, less than 5% dilution. I've got her in with the others but in a box of hay and covered with a towel or she would fret away from them. It worked for the sheep but I'm not sure about the little duckling?keeping fingers crossed cos the little beggars are very quick to spread!!
