Pigeons Don't Like Red!
« on: July 05, 2010, 12:39 »
Just read an article that says a degree of success has been had by hanging something red near your crops and flower beds - apparently pigeons see red as a sign of danger; anything that flaps in the breeze works best. I'm willing to give it a try as running out through the kitchen door screaming like a banshee is wearing a little thin and the pigeons are looking bored with my antics! Just one question - who worked out that the tree rats don't like red? ...................................! Jude

I think that if red was the answer farmers would have solved their pigeon problems many years ago. Definitely too easy a fix, when pigeon can learn to ignore gas cannons because they recognise they are no danger the effectiveness of a piece of red plastic flapping in the breeze will not last long.

Thats so funny............when we moved here think 5 years ago now, we used to laugh at old Joan over the road, screaming at the pigeons, putting the water hose on them and flapping around at them.  Unfortunately this was in her front garden.  She got some right funny looks.  Jump to a year later and I start to grow my own veg and get into feeding  the little birds and theres me and the other half doing exactly the same as old Joan.  Hurts my hand banging on the window at them.

P.S I can bang on the window, wave my hands about to no avail but waving a blue paper towel at them makes them scatter LOL  So think the person who wrote about Red being the colour was colour blind.  I'd defo go with blue.

Perhaps if we dress in red and run around flapping and shrieking like a banshee`s the flashing blue lights will scare the pigeon off. :)

I would have thought shape recognition would work better- get a fake shotgun and try waving that.

Hang on, that may also result in blue flashing lights too!

Mind you I seem to have flies that recognise a fly swat and a rolled up magazine, but know I wont really swipe at them with a spatula!

Who knows....
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Hmmm interesting!!!

We sat in the shed today having a cuppa and watched a big fat woodpidgeon walk up and down the rows like it was in a supermarket.  It eventually decided the Kohl Rabi leaves were today's lunch.

Cheeky so n so, if I had my way it would have been my lunch.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Wonder if there is enough red on all those redundant England flags?

Just to add confusion I put in some spare  brassicas where a row of peas decided they had enough and died and they are mulched with straw but not netted further down the plot I have put in the spare  cabbage planted through weed fabric and not netted. Pigeons ignore them both but no more than 5 foot away in my neighbours plot they are up and down the rows looking for a way in - must be they are fussy where where they put their feet :D :D :D

Pigeon are fussy where they put their feet, they may be feeding  hard on a field of freshly drilled wheat but will go elsewhere if it rains, because they hate getting their feet muddy. :)

The weed fabric will seem a bit strange underfoot and that will be enough to put the woodies off until one braves it because he`s hungrier than the rest or does not want muddy feet. :)
