Looking Forward
« on: July 01, 2010, 18:21 »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this board so please be kind! [I'm sure you all are ]
I have been growing a few veg this year and am inspired so am going for a large allotment size plot next year. I am trying to grow as much as possible. I am planning the brassica bed. I am concerned about veg all coming to maturity at once and not withstanding the winter. So,whats winter hardy please?can a row of kale be sown all together, and will it stand for weeks when big enough to eat? ditto brussel sprouts?
Thanks.

Hi,

Youll find that all brassicas are winter hardy, that includes cabbages, sprouts etc. They will definetley survive the winter and even keep cropping through to just before spring. Never grown kale before so cant help you with that. One word oc caution though, if you are planning a sprout bed then make sure you plan in netting to stop the butterfies and pigeons from ruining your harvest ::) :)

some of the early winter cabbages are not so hardy, and you eat them up to Christmas time. January King and Savoy cabbages (Tundra is my favourite) will withstand the worst.
Kale is hardy and you can just pick a few leaves of each plant to use. The Tuscan Black Kale is supposed to be eaten before the new year, so that one cannot be as hardy as the others. As Jamie said you'll have to net all of the brassicas.
