Overwinterd spuds
« on: June 08, 2010, 17:43 »
As I`m not as good as I thought at digging stuff up, I have spuds growing where I was going to weedkill the ground and cover the plot until next year(long story-a bit ill)

Change of plan, when should I dig them up? not too sure what they are? leave till the foliage dies off or ?

If you've not had blight problems in your area, you could always leave them until you see the foliage start to die off and then harvest them. I always find a leftover crop produces better than a new sowing.

If you've had blight, or the dreaded blackleg, then it's chancey to leave them.

Very few of us are that good that we can get rid of every single volunteer spud. they seem to grow if you leave as much as a single cell in the ground. Dig em up if you need the space or leave em if you want a surprise!!

Why weedkiller aswell?

I`m not fit enough to dig the whole plot and there were a lot of vine type things last year.

Just trying to make it a bit easier, then the blooming spuds pop up-yep shut up and stop complaining.

Sorry that my original post upset you and sorry that you not well but no need to tell me to shut-up!!!

In my experience any weed that survives being covered is unlikely to be significantly reduced with weedkiller.

Just an opinion that i was allowed to have.
