sweetcorn not all the same variety
« on: June 04, 2010, 08:27 »
went to look at my two sweetcorn beds yesterday which are now looking better after a funny start.

They were all purchased the same, same variety or so I thought but in one bed we have two different types , one like the lot I grew last year and the name is on the tip of my tongue  ??? and we seem to have a second lot with red inside leaves  (early bird) thats the type

will this hurt as they are together, will it affect the pollination etc

Never allow cross pollination between types as this will result in tough, starchy kernels in all types.

One other pollination detail to bear in mind is that, if you’ve chosen a super sweet variety, you’ll need to keep it isolated from standard types. Cross-pollination will lead to a drop in sweetness,

If you Google "Sweetcorn cross pollination", there's loads of result telling you to avoid it.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you dig them up scarefully you could move one lot elsewhere.... the roots don't like being moved much but with a big lump of soil they should be OK.

I am assuming the plants are not more than a foot high yet, of course

You really must not grow sweetcorn of different types together. They will cross pollenate & this in turn will effect the taste & texture of the kernels.

 Good luck.

I generaly just stick things in the ground green side up.

My book says that Supersweet must not be allowed to cross-pollinate, but tendersweet is OK.

The back of my Tendersweet packet ("Suttons Swift F1") says "Don't plant near any other variety"

Dunno who is right, but keeping them apart would be safest ...

If they pollinate at different times you will be OK.  IF ...
