its rumoured to have been around for 60 million yrs(ice age and all) weed killers will slow it down though. i've had some success with round-up on a flagged area, hardly any growth this year but IT WILL BE BACK.

Did anyone see Gardeners World when they planted it in pots around a pond, they must be mad. OK the roots are contained but what about the shoots that have the spores on that blow like dandelion seeds??????????? :D :D :D :D :D
Would that be what is botanically called Marestail (Hippuris) rather than the Horsetail (Equisetum) which is the problem weed? Or it might have been the Water Horsetail E. fluviatile which isn't very invasive?

also sorry DD for my tongue in cheek comment, I'm not about to use unauthorised weedkiller

Someone advised me to use Doff Tough weed killer to get rid of Mares Tail.  I’ve not used it yet, so I can’t confirm its effectiveness.  If anyone has, would you please enlighten me/us.  I shall try it later this year and let you know the result.  Here’s hoping it works, (my memory, that is.)

Ammonium sulphamate still available as a compost heap accelerator - amazing isn't it, as both routes must get the chemical back into the environment I would think - but don't spill any whilst carrying it to the compost heap 'coz you'll be breaking the law ...   :tongue2:

Oh dear I wouldn't want to make that mistake! You don't happen to know which compost accelerators contain this terrible chemical so I can avoid them?

 :)

It was me who mentioned and used Doff Tough weedkiller last year - this year there isn't any to be seen in my seashore shingle bed except for three ferns which I missed as they were under a yucca I cut off in autumn. I've only got a bit left in my sprayer bottle which also leaks a bit so I am going to use a flat brush to get the last dregs out and use it where it has grown in my flower border. That reminds me - I must get some compost accelerator !!!  ::)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

That's good to hear.

I wonder if the Doff formulation has a better "Surfactant" which makes it "stick" better?

But that's come up here before - "adding washing up liquid etc." - and I'm firmly of the opinion that if there was an even-better-surfactant that Monsanto would already be marketing it (even though they might sell less, so-to-speak) or the 3rd party Glyphosate makers' marketing-speaks would be shouting it from every hoarding.
