Incubator insecurity
« on: June 02, 2010, 22:08 »
Just bought a Covatutto 16 on Ebay, which arrived without instructions (I know!) Can anyone tell me how long it should take to reach operating temp? I've had it running for 24hours now, the light comes on and off but  it's still well below what's recommended for ducks... I've adjusted the thermostat but doesn't seem to have made a difference . I'd be grateful for any advice (about the incubator, not my bad shopping choices!) Thanks.

Check your thermometer?

Do you have another one you can double chek with?

I borrowed one of these and although a nightmare to keep correct temperature, I did have a very good hatch :)

I found that a if a thermostat at egg level was reading the correct temp then the one at the top was way to hot.....

A bit of trial and error was needed.

But if its not coming up to temps at all then there is a problem :(
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I have one of these. I think it works ok, BUT maintaining temp and humidy while holding the lid off to manually turn 16 eggs (actually usually onl fits 12 of my girls' eggs) proved a problem. I have had very good hatch rates though. The light kinda goes on and off all the time.  It only takes mine about an hour to reach temp, but I usually leave it about 3 hours for the humidity.

Dont despair, it also makes a PERFECT brooder for the last 3 days of hatching, when you stop turning. It has a nonslip grill, is the easiest to clean, and has reasonable resale value. Maybe you could save up and get an automatic one later, and use this one as a brooder.
