All Out War !!
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:06 »
I have/had 2 ISA Browns.  One unfortunately broke her leg and the vet was unable to splint it as it was so high up.   :( Was going to cost hundreds £s so to put her out of her suffering sadly had her put to sleep.  My other ISA looked sad, so we went out and got a speckeldy to keep her company - well, we introduced her at night - all was well!!  Now every morning my ISA shouts her head off from about 5 in the morning, she is soooo cross and put out, but luckily still alive as the thought has crossed my mind to strangle her, as I'm sure it has crossed my neighbours mind!!

I go out and squirt her with a bit of water if she is going really bannanas and yesterday even caught her and put her in the cat carrier for an hour, which seemed to calm her.

I forgot to leave their door open last night (they are in a secured run) and so had to let them out at 5 when I heard a bit of noise, but I don't mind that so long as there isn't too much noise.  I live in an urban area and don't want them to become a nuisance and more to the point don't want to fall out of love with her as I fear she will put me off the whole idea of having chooks and enjoying them.

Anyone had the same problem and how did you cure it and how long did it take to cure it??!!

this is perfectly normal as you have introduced an intruder into her property. She is only doing what is natural to her. Please don't squirt her with water but make sure that the coup is closed at nights and as dark as you can possibly get it whilst still allowing for air to circulate. They should eventually bond but it often can take a couple of weeks. Did you isolate the new one for a couple of weeks to avoid any possible risk of infection? It is always better to have three hens rather than two so that one isn't left on her own.

Staffies are softer than you think.

Ahhh, poor thing. First of all her friend disapears then a total stranger is there in her house when she wakes up...no wonder the poor thing is screeching her head off, she is trying to tell you there is an imposter in the camp!!!
Normally its better all round when trying to introduce new hens to do it slowly, not least because you dont know if the new hen has anything 'nasty' that they may pass on to your exsisting girl :(. Ride with it for now, chickens dont like change, she will be upset for a while, but things will settle and im sure they will be the best of friends in no time :)
