runner bean question!
« on: May 13, 2010, 19:57 »
Hi all.

Have put my bean poles up ready in the bog standard a frame position!! I have it twelve poles wide.

I have two questions!

1. Do i need to plant 12 bean plants (1 plant for one row of the 12 poles), or should i plant on both sides of the row, therfore using 24 plants?!?!?

2. Would the above setup give me many runners or should i think of extending? I do like runners and so do the family! (4 of us!)

Cheers!!
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

I grow on both sides, and even consider 2 plants per cane if spaced widely enough
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Do I understand that it's just a single row of upright canes, rather than, say, an "A" frame. What spacing do you have them at?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think Gowing did say it was an A frame, but spacing unclear  :)

Silly me - lower case "a" - I missed it.

I'd double up if wide enough, (1 foot or more between canes) to give 48 plants.

i usually put one plant per cane but also put a seed per cane as well and find it extends season a bit

I sow 2-seeds-per-pot and than plant one-pot-per-cane :)

sowed too many of the easy going plants last two years so only have 7 single plants this year. Usually find everyone else has them at the same time you have your own glut and yes you can freeze them but get sick of them through the year.

I found this out and only grow a few plants.  I have a long A frame and grow climbing peas and French beens on the rest.

I put my canes about 18 inches apart.  But run a cane accross the bottom about 2 inches off the soil.  Then run several strings top to bottom between the canes.  The climbing peas and beans like the extra.  Use twine and not a plastic type string, the plants cant grip that as well.
