Complete novice runner bean question
« on: April 23, 2009, 14:03 »
Hi, I'm starting my own veg patch in my garden, I've manged to start a few things growing, but I was given a little pot with runner beans which have now started to grow there seems to be 3 growing in each pot and they are getting quite big. I was just hoping someone could help me out, do these need re potting into bigger pots until I finish digging out the space thats soon to become my veg patch?? which might be a couple more weeks yet.
Thanks

Possibly - how big are the pots, and are the roots showing at the bottom?  I think it's a bit early to put runner beans in the ground at the moment in any case, in case we get a late frost.

In the mean time, keep them somewhere cool and light.

The pots are about 7/8 cm and I've just checked and the roots are starting to poke through the bottom of one of the pots.
Thanks

Hi, i would put them in a cold-frame and that should slow the growth down enough so that the plants will be ok to go out in a few weeks. I agree with HLS, don't risk putting them straight out becuase therre may be a slight grass frost towards the end of the week

Hope this helps
Chris

Hi, thanks but I don't have a cold frame. I only have a 4 tier plastic greenhouse and an unfinished veg patch. Shall I just leave them where they are for now??
Thanks so much

Repot them in to individual pots the same size. It does not matter if the roots show at the bottom, this is only a holding operation until you put them out. Put them in a shady and sheltered spot outside and keep them watered. Be prepared to bring them at night if frost is threatened and put them out in the morning. A shed or garage is fine as it is dark at night anyway.

should be ok for 2-3 weeks, dig your bean bed , 6-8 inches deep ,

you place 2 plants per cane , we dont nip out the growing tip ,

water them in well and wait , shgould be getting buckets of beans by mid-late june ,

keep picking , the more you pick them the more you get ,

when growing slows down leave a few beans oin the plant ,

then collect them and allow them to dry out

then save the seeds for next years bean plants , keep the saved beans dry then start all over again next year , enjoy
