I keep my chickens on shredded paper (endless free supply from wife's work), when i clean them out can i use it to chuck around spuds as a mulch or will the fresh poo do any damage.

In this case, I'd say be very cautious about mulching your potatoes. The tubers like to either grow very close to the surface or actually pop out of the ground. Raw chicken manure is very strong and would burn the tubers and any plant parts it touches. You could get away with it by first mulching with straw all around the plant and then placing the mucked paper on top but I wouldn't apply too much of the mucked paper. It could end up creating a lot of top growth at the expense of root crop.

I'd agree with this...could be too strong!  :blink:

I mulch with grass mowings once there's been a good rainfall and if frost still threatens.

Compost bin it is then, thats what i did last year and had some nice compost at the end of the year,  trouble is its fills up a bit quick although i have a new hot composter so it may work a bit quicker.

just keep the mix right and add some compost aceraltor and have a spare heap/bin ready it will be ready in no time
