planting bean seeds

Last year one of the lottie holders planted his beans (runner) on the surface of the multi purpose compost, the bean was pushed into the compost lenth ways so the white mark on the side of the bean was just above the soil, result 100% success  rate.
This year i tried the same thing at the mo all the beans have sprouted roots into the soil all from the bottom.
Have done the same thing with my french beans, the same again, roots from the bottom and some nice green leaves coming from the top.
so i decied to try cue's this way, last weekend planted two seeds as above one week later nice roots delving into the soil i did cover these once  i saw the roots.
The reason he dose his beans like this is to save them rotting from excess watering.
