Depends how good your Kung Fu Hoe moves are. Unless you are the Master, it just might be safer to weed by hand.

That wouldn't be half as funny if I hadn't had to do the same myself last year  :D

Weeds will win in the end, the creeping buttercup did for mine. If you can sacrifice a few for the good of the many, make a few spots where you can kneel and weed by hand from.

I also did the same last year............. weeeds won.
this year I have covered the onion patch with weed control, the sort that go's under gravel water soaks through I then cut X's and planted my sets through so far all I have is onions no weeds. I bought a large roll off ebay cost about £20 there is enough fabric for years n years. I have also used it were me cabbages, Beans and Courgets are.
please do not think that I am lazy but I cannot do much weeding cos of arthritus in me spine once I am down it's a job to get up again. I have got to say my pach this year is the most weed free that I have ever had.
As is the gardener, so is the garden

True, the weeds can easily win, but if you weed regularly, as in once or twice a week and catch the weeds while still small, your onions will have a good chance of hitting some respectable sizes.

Here's a good video:
