i found a diagram in one of Dr hessayan's books ages ago that showed the carrot needs about 1 metre squared of root space per carrot.

Isn't that rather a heck of a lot?  

out of interest, how many carrots did you put in the tub and how wide was it?

I've grown carrots in a round pot about 12" diameter,. and 12" deep.  Probably 20 carrots, with thinnings taken to leave 10 to get to reasonable size. I don't grow for monsters, but they aren't tiddlers either (other than the thinnings)

it was a hexagonal tub, about 12-14" at its wide point and about the same depth - had grown spuds successfully in same container prior to this (though can't remember if I used new compost - which might be the reason they didn't grow! ).

did they need thinning out i had some round carrots grown in flower buckets last year they worked out ok , as they are designed for pots why dont you try them

When I tried them it was my first year growing veg - I simply was not aware there were type specifically for containers - I tried about six or seven IIRC though it was early nantes, which I belive can be used in containers too?

I think 1 metre square per carrot might bit a little ott! I use storage bxes, I guess they are about 12" deep/wide an about 18" long. I sowed them in a grid at 1" spacing. They weren't giant, so maybe 1.5-2" spacing would be better, but two storage box full did us quite a few meals.
