Straight in the ground :) If the roots are disturbed you end up with odd shaped carrots. You can plant them into deep pots or tubs (eg storage boxes) and leave them to grow in there until it's time to harvest though.

You cannot sow them in shallow containers and plant out.

IMO It's either...sow in really deep containers and leave them to grow to harvest, or straight in soil :)

You beat me to it tam

I have grown them in tall & slim paper pots ("Richy's Pots"), and then planted out, but the effort was more than I want to repeat, so I now grow in large-ish flower pots (I'm guessing about 10"! diameter)

We get our best carrots here by direct seeding in July. By then the soil is warm enough to germinate seeds quickly and when the roots are ready, the soil is cool enough for them to go straight into cool storage. If you want bigger carrots, start them in late spring. Like others, I never transplant as they'll fork terribly and pots are simply too much time for me to bother. I believe the later seeding also avoids the worst of the carrot fly (never completely though  >:()

if you damage the apical meristem of tap roots the plant will be damaged and if it doesn't bolt it will almost certainly 'fang'
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

Thanks Sheridan, we have a lot of relatively inexperienced members and it's best to avoid using too specialist terms if you don't also translate  :)

How long do you want your carrots to be? Anything from about a foot deep should work for small carrots, deeper for bigger ones. Buckets or storage boxes work well.

I just want them to grow!

I tried them the year before last in a container about 14" deep.  They started to grow, the leaves started to form but then everything stopped - I have ni idea why.  I thought it might have beed because the container was not deep enough but apparently this would not be the case...

thansk for this info by the way...

i found a diagram in one of Dr hessayan's books ages ago that showed the carrot needs about 1 metre squared of root space per carrot.
i suppose you can overlap somewhat, but if you grow them in too small a container they will be squashed.

you're better either to use a tub that's got no bottom, or just put them in the ground.

out of interest, how many carrots did you put in the tub and how wide was it?
