tomato leaf spot
« on: May 30, 2007, 18:58 »
Hi everyone, have been reading posts on here for a few months now and all the info has been really useful. Could do with some advice on my tomato plants. Went out to look at them this morning and the leaves are covered in small brown spots.

For a picture look here:

Am hoping it has been caused by all the rain we have had lately but as it's affecting plants that are in my mini greenhouse too I'm not so sure.

Thanks!

Well it isn't potato blight, I don't think (which is good news).

Mainly I replied to say Welcome to the forum!

thanks for the welcome - just picked some greens for my dinner and had a look at my potatoes too. The leaves of my earlies were also covered in the same spots!!

Hi and welcome to the forum lynnds, I think your problem is pest based, it looks like the leaves have been eaten down to the harder veins of the leaf, probably some little caterpillar at a guess.
I've seen this kind of damage before but can't remember what it was.  :?

Welcome ,just looked at your sick tomatoes , I cant tell you what the problem is , I would be tempted to remove any suspect leaves , break off cleanly or cut carefully where the leaf stalk joins the main stem.

Then see if any more become affected , could be a virus, is the soil you are using clean , have you grown tomatoes in the same spot and not changed the soil.

Potatoes can get a virus called black spot which looks a bit like this and can ruin your crop, it may have spread to your tomatoes, if they are in close proximity.

As your potatoes have it as well (and I assume your tomatoes are outdoors near them) I'd say capsid bug.
