I'm converting some ground that has nettles on at the moment.  It's a clay soil and I'm working in some well rotted manure.

Would it be worth liming the plot?

I've never used lime before...can anyone recommend if/where to use it?

Don't know about the general answer, but never lime at the same time as manure

As far as i know, if you have nettles on your ground its in good shape, soil wise.
I would tend to lime first ( the nettles will hate that ) then cover with manure.

Nettles will indicate that the soil is fertile but acid.

I'd personally clear the nettles and lime.

Nick, lime for brassicas, manure for gross feeders ( onions potaoes and the like ) and use fertiliser ( especially superphosphate ) for the root crops ( parsnips/ carrots ) Never, ever manure and lime the same ground.

Well...actually Brassics like manure as well. Where does all the leaf growth come from?

The soil will be quite acid so I'd test the pH and take it up.

Soil sounds fertile....perhaps lime and manure in your rotation palns but not at once.

Onions don't really like manure. OK if for a previous crop tho.
