I'd be interested to hear too Chuffy.

Looks to me like you should still get some big ones immediately under the stem, but trailers would give you more.  Although I'm wondering in the UK climate whether it might be better just to focus on those main ones anyhow.

Here's another illustration, although these are more upright than my diagram so show less tubers growing along the stems.

I'll let y'all know...

Either I'll be whoopin; and hollerin' as I cook up a batch of sweet potato curry or you'll hear the sound of tumbleweed over the plot and the steady ploploplop of tears falling on bare earth...

Right. I've just dug over the sweet potato bed. Really, I shouldn't be posting on this thread as my response to the question in the thread title is a resounding 'no'.  :(

From half a dozen mixed Beauregarde and T65 plants I have a miserable handful of skinny roots that look more like hotdog sausages than spuds. £15 thoroughly well spent...not.

I shan't be growing trying to grow them again.  >:(

I would have posted a picture but I can't bear the humiliation.  ???

OH!!  :( :(

Maybe I shall try growing them from the supermarket ones like others here have suggested to save the initial outlay.

For £15 you'd expect a barrow load, wouldn't you  :tongue2:

What a shame Chuffy

Thanks, I'm bearing up under the weight of disappointment. I find that liberal doses of damson brandy help.

I did try sprouting a supermarket sweet-spud last year but nothing happened. I thought that the supermarket versions were treated to prevent them from sprouting?

I feel for you Chuffy  :(

My Oca growing experiment this year ended in a similar tumbleweed and tears fiasco  :tongue2:  Moaned on the forum that I planted 6 tubers and got not a sausage.  Got a reply from Dr Bill gently breaking the news that I should have waited till the plants died right back as they formed the tubers at the last minute

Didn't Geoff Hamilton have a quote about unusual crops being unusual for a reason  ;)

I had some whoppers - maybe because I bought mine from the corner shop. I also planted them next to my runner beans which were in a deeply composted bed. I didn't water them though, I tend to rely on compost and rain once a plant has got its roots into the soil.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
