manure?
« on: October 13, 2009, 16:30 »
i've dug over my plot and it's all ready for the winter, well except for i was wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice? is it best to just spinkle the manure over the top and let the worms take it down or dig it in? any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise,

I have beds about 10' by 6' and I tend to dump 4/5 wheelbarrow loads of poo, spread it evenly and cover for a few weeks, then I take the cover off and fork the whole lot in.

I don't know why, I just do.

Depends as well on what you intend to grow...

I spread as much as I have on my raised beds too but I only dig in in on two beds  - the pea / bean one and the potato one. With the roots and the brassica bed, I leave it on the surface. Brassicas like a firm bed so I don't want to disturb it and some roots don't like manure as it makes them fork, so I let the worms take it in over winter then scrape it aside when I sow my seeds or transplant my seedlings.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hi louise, I have dug my manure in as I find if you have a shallow top soil digging the manure into the sub soil helps to break it up and eventually turn into lovely rich top soil. all the best Kloggs. :)
If a jobs worth doing etc. etc.

I always spread it on top and let the worms do the hard work. Also, they can incorporate it into the soil better than you can. :D

You could try doing one patch one way and one patch another way, see which works best for you - I don't think there are any hard and fast rules really.

Remember to check the provenance of the manure.
Remember to do the "bean test" on the manure to check for high aminopyralid contamination, before you dig it in to the beds.

on top let the weather an' nature take its course.....
digging it in only sends it deeper into the soil or it gets washed away....My opinion!!
