keeping carrot fly barrier up!!
« on: August 06, 2009, 22:24 »
hi, further to a thread below my carrots have been attacked by carrot fly for the 2nd year running.  i did erect a 2ft barrier of vertical enviromesh around canes, however the problem i had was getting it to stay up.  the mesh kept coming down in windy weather.

what means do people use to secure the environmesh?

cheers

I rest it on canes with a topper on them (those individual drinkable bio yoghurt pots, or a tennis ball, etc) and use bricks to weigh it down at the bottom.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

How wide is your enviromesh?I think mine is about 1.5metre wide and i just use it like a tunnel with hoops.

i think i may need to consider using it with hoops as this years plan definitely hasn't worked.  i think the mesh is about a metre wide

Mine is simply thrown over the plants & supported by short lengths of pressure treated rough cut wooden batten, with about 18" above the ground. The mesh is held down  with empty 4 litre milk bottles filled with water.

This piccie is not the best to show the support system, but may help.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have stapled mine to the raised bed, not the greatest way to do it, but I am trying to keep of the carrot fly and the badger
