weed control cloth

i have an awful lot of bindweed, would weed control cloth be of any use or not? once i have got the thick of the weed out

Yes, it will keep the bindweed under control and probably kill it off if left in place long enough.  I'd make sure it was a) thick enough, and b) properly put down - if it's thin 1m wide strips, the gaps between them can easily become revealed thus letting the weed back.

The woven stuff is better than plastic - it allows the soil to breathe and is more durable.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have weed control fabric, covered with wood chippings, on my paths.
The bindweed runs along underneath till it gets to the open end >:(
