Tomato questions...
« on: August 05, 2009, 18:31 »
OK so after a month away from the plot I've got back, dug up my onions and hung them up to dry then I tackled the JUNGLE that's taken over the greenhouse!! My toms have been growing away like no ones business, however...

It looks like some of the leaves/stems have started to rot. I'm hoping it's not blight but I've removed the leaves/stems affected as well as thinned them right out so that air can circulate a lot better. Is it possible that this is just due to the moisture build up from lack of circulation? Also, if it turns out to be blight, can the removed bits be put onto the compost heap?

The RHS index page contains a number of links to tomato problems if you scroll down a bit

http://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/problems_fruitveg.asp

Might be worth seeing what else your symptoms could be from that information, as without piccies it's a little hard to say what's wrong with yours.

If it is blight I would advise against composting as the spores may not be killed off and thus will be spread back onto the soil at a later date.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Are the rotted bits sort of hairy?  If so it is probably botrytis and you have done the right thing.

Cheers,

Gillie
