Eggs during pregnancy...
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:05 »
Hi all,

All my chickens have been immunised against salmonella - does anyone know whether it is safe to eat their soft boiled / poached eggs when pregnant? Apparently I should be eating lots of eggs, but I prefer the ones with a runny yolk! Any advice much appreciated...

(By the way, have read a few previous posts about this so, 'Kate & ducks': I totally agree that there is a load of rubbish out there seemingly designed to reduce pregnant women to paranoid gibbering wrecks. And that in France they merrily tuck into brie and pate, washed down with red wine and seem to suffer no ill effects. However, I've had problems before with previous pregnancies so am planning to go completely by the book, at least for the first 3 months - silly, and verging on superstitious, but there you go!)

I'm naughtily logging in from work, so will be in and out today - so please don't be offended if it takes a while for me to reply!

don't know (my boys are in their mid 20's - in fact my youngest is 24 today  :D) but if you are doing it by the book for at least 3 months then follow the advice given by the doctors. In my day (says she sounding like an old fogey ) there was no problem with eggs soft cheese etc.
Oh and congratulations on the pregnancy  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

I am expecting my first baby in September and have my own hens.  I too prefer to eat my eggs soft boiled.  While I have avoided eating eggs from any other sources, I have eaten the eggs from my own girls medium to hard boiled instead of fully runny and not suffered any ill effects.  I don't know if my girls were immunised or not either.  I figure if you know your own girls and how fresh your eggs are, then you are bound to be fine.  I have had my girls since last August and no one has had any ill effects from eating my eggs.

Congratulations on the pregnancy

i think this one is down to personal preference really and what you beleieve . Me and my wife arent big believers in what people say you can and cant eat during pregnancy as if you believed all the tails people tell you would hardly eat . my wife ate eggs ,soft cheese , pate , nuts and plenty of everything else . But its down to personal preference .
A little example being when my eldest who is now 3 went for her 6 month check we were told to ONLY brush her teeth with childs toothpaste as adults tootpaste is dangerous for some reason yet last month at our youngests check up we were told to use adults toothpaste as childrens paste carries no benefits whatsoever over adults . crazy crazy crazy  :D

hi, first of all, congratulations on the pregnancy. i would speak to your midwife about the eggs. things were different when i had my children, my eldest is 20 now. ! i know you will get alot of people saying things like i did that when i was pregnant and my children were ok. well we are lucky enough to live in a developed society where medical advances and discoveries are always been made. sometimes things can seem to be a bit over the top...but i think i would rather be safe than sorry. i lived in bournmouth during my first pregnacy, he was born in august and it was sooooo hot. i think i must have eaten the soft whippy ice cream man out of stock... now they recommend that you dont eat soft ice cream (among other things)...some people think its going over the top, because they ate the stuff and were ok, but maybe they were lucky!...maybe the ice cream i ate didnt have the salmonalla bug in, but if it had have done i may have lost the baby. ive heard lots of things that people used to do when they were pregnant....are we living in a health and safety gone mad world , or are we benefiting from medical advances in knowlage?speak to your midwife, explain you only eat eggs from your chickens.....and if she still says no, its nine months of your life...its not a long time, best to be safe than sorry eh?..take care, hope morning sickness isnt too much of a problem, best wishes lizzie x

Hi Congratulations!

When I was pregnant with my son (who is now 7) I followed every rule to the minute!because I was told and it was my first pregnancy, I dint know any different that what was advised to me and my Hubby!  I only ate eggs Hard boiled (we didnt have our own hens), I was told then not to eat soft ice-cream or cheese that was unpasturised and no pate because it has too much iron! I felt like I was under survellance LOL  ::) He was fine

In my second pregnacy I was much more relaxed I ate what I though was good for me and my baby! just using common sense! you know what you feed you hens!

Saying that! I was sick from morning till night for 7 months with Freya and only ate fruit and veg, salad and pasta!

I ate loads of chocolate when I was pregnant with Kyle and guess what................

Kyle is not a chocolate lover, but Freya (2) cant get enough of the stuff!!! LOL  ???
