true potato seeds.
« on: July 18, 2009, 20:53 »
Hi, for the first time ever I have berries on my spuds! I have bought them home with me and am wondering if anybody has tried to grow them before and if so what they did or wouldn't do next time.
I thought I'd put them on the windowsill until a little softer then treat them like harvesting tomato seed. To store I thought of storing dry over toasted rice in an air tight container at room temperature. I am unsure as to if they would need a spell in the fridge to break dormancy...
Any thoughts or experiances?

If you use the search facility there have been several posts on this subject.  The consensus of opinion is that potatoes from these seeds do not grow true to type.  If they did, farmers wouldn't bother with seed potatoes. ;) :)
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks, I realise this, but I thought it would be interesting and a bit of fun!

I left mine in a yogurt pot in the corner of the shed at the lottie, and brought them home in the spring, sliced them open and picked out 50 seeds. Germinated them in damp kitchen roll. One germinated quite fast so potted that up, the others followed a while back so potted a few up and chose the strongest to pot on.

They are now in the greenhouse in pots, and taller than me.

Will be harvesting later in the year, once the foliage dies back.
