Hi, I'm just going through my seed catalogue choosing gifts for my Japanese sister in law as souvenirs. She wants some leek seeds, but she lives in an area where there is heavy snow throughout Dec - Mar. Would it make more sense for her to have earlies or lates? The summer climate is also hot and humid.

I was wondering if leeks would be hardy enough to be buried under snow for four months. I know they winter their carrots over there and they come up the following spring tasting incredibly sweet. Not sure about other crops mind you.

Any advice would be great. Lates or earlies?

I would get her some Musselburgh leeks to try.  If they don't stand the climate she can't grow any leeks.

Yes agree musselburgh,  couldnt dig any for weeks last winter because the ground was frozen but once it had thawed they were perfect.
