grey mould - which plants are affected
« on: June 19, 2009, 08:13 »
All my garlic suffered from grey mould this year and I had to remove them.  :(

I have some spare space now and I was wondering if the fungus(?) would
affect other plants. Are there any plants I can safely plant/ sow there?

How long do I have to wait before I can plant members of the onion family
in this spot again? And how does it spread in the first place.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge  ::)

It's at the root end. The green bits started wiltering so I thought they might be ready. When I pulled one out it was all soft and rotten at the bottom  :(

I'm just wondering if it's ok to sow lettuces, carrots or beets or other things in that spot or would they get the mould too?

Yes, that sums it up  :(  Only that a bulb hadn't formed yet.
So no onions, garlic and leek for the next 15 years

Does it affect other plants too?  Like Strawberries?

I think most of these types of diseases are fairly host specific, so apart from anything from the allium family you should be ok.

I'm sure someone who grows more onions etc than I do, will come along and correct me if I'm wrong tho'
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Its a huge shame for you  :(  It only affects aliums so you should be OK to grow something else...you can still grow some onions in pots I hope?

Yeah, that's really annoying  >:(

But I'm glad it doesn't affect any other plants.

Thanks for your help

I'd be tempted to follow them with brassicas then you can lime the soil too, which may help kill off the fungi spores.
