Another asparagus question
« on: May 15, 2009, 18:01 »
I planted some asparagus back in the beginning of march, but they haven't come up yet.  They weren't the best specimins ever, but they were very cheap.   >:(

I have some that I planted last year and they are thriving on the same plot.  :D

My question is that if they haven't come up by now, are they likely to, as I have other stuff that I could plant there  ???

Thanks

I'm wondering the same thng. I paid £4 for one crown from the supermarket then got another 12 from a nursery on ebay for £10. I have one spear, which I presume comes from the expensive one and no sign of the rest!

I've only got one or two tiny spears showing ...... but aren't they a May/June veg anyway .... I think they're forced with black plastic covering by the big producers. Might be wrong, of course!
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Well, I think, if they do not show within the next couple of weeks, that's it.

Unless you are desperate for the bed I would give them a bit longer. I put some in 2/3years ago in Feb and nothing much happened till August. Now I am getting regular spears. Similarity was it was a VERY dry spring so you may find this rain brings them on

Cheers HH
Keep digging

New crowns can be very slow to establish and sprout so be patient a while longer. If you see nothing by July, then you know they didn't pull through. For any future plantings, put in a small marker stick to note each asparagus crown and you can watch these specific spots for signs of life....it avoids any accidental digging.

I agree with Trill and HH; leave them a bit longer before you write them off.

When I put mine in last year I only got a few pathetic stems but this year they've really come up.  I'm still leaving them till next year before I cut any and I can't wait! Yum!

I will try and be patient a little longer. I think I am being put off by last years crowns that are storming ahead (3ft high),  I have been very good though too as I haven't touched them, even though I have been tempted. I am sure they will be worth it next year.
