Deep joy - Butternut Squash
« on: May 23, 2009, 16:32 »
At my second attempt have managed to cultivate 4 seedlings.  :D They are near the kitchen windowsill, so do I now take them down to the plot and put in the cold frame?  They seem to be leaning towards the light and as I have never got this far before, dont know what is the next step

If they've only just germimated, GF, I'd let them grow quite a bit bigger before starting to harden them off in the cold frame.  Turn them regularly if poss so they don't always point in the same direction, put some alu foil behind them to reflect some light back.

Mine won't be hardened off for another week or two yet
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Once you put them out they need quite a lot of space as they grow like triffids.  Stop them at four or five squashes and pray for lots of sunshine to ripen them, which it seems we might get this year.
Cheese makes everything better.

Keep them indoors as long as possible, they grow much faster and i find the bigger the plant the better it handles being planted out.

I never stop the plants as i would rather have more smaller squashes than a few biggun`s.
If they feed three for one meal they are just right but normaly half goes in the fridge. :)

I got some in loo roll tubes, none come up yet though they've been in 8 days. This my first time growing them.
Can you hear voices?

They definately need more heat than courgettes or pumpkins to germinate. They will not get so leggy in a cold frame.
