Poorly seedlings
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:32 »
My cauliflowers and brussel sprouts started off lovely but now look as if they are dying. Strangely enough the same thing happened last year and also affected the cabbages. The cabbages probably aren't big enough yet to show this sign. I use grow bag compost to sow them in. The cauliflowers are in a cold frame (plastic) and the brussel sprouts are in an unheated greenhouse. The pictures are of the brussel sprouts but the cauliflowers are exactly the same. Help please.

They look like they have been scorched to me. Neither of them like the sun through glass. I might geminate in a coldframe, but as soon as they are up they are outside.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I agree with the above, I started mine off in an unheated GH but as soon as they were showing they went outside

I was about to post about a similar problem with my sprouting broccoli, I've had mine in the greenhouse too, I'll move it and hope for the best.
As this is my first full season on my allotment (I've only grown flowers before), every new seedling that comes up is an adventure, obviously I may have been killing them with kindness :)

Soon as I saw them Matron I thought sunburned/scorching. You've obviously had them in a protected spot in the greenhouse and brought them into a sunnier spot where they couldn't cope. Its no different than putting them outside on a too bright day when they're not used to it. They'll probably recover but just give them short, hour long, exposure to sunlight the first few days, then gradually increase the time.

Thank you for this post, think the same has happened to my cucumbers and courgettes.

Only they were inside by the window and fine, then I've put them out and now they look dead. I've moved them to a slightly shadier position for a few days see what happens, very annoyed as the courgettes looked quite big!!
I'm a vegetable virgin! All advice offered very welcome!!

Did you harden them off first?

A move from inside straight to outside can be a major shock.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
