Think Maggies poorly
« on: June 30, 2009, 20:06 »
My son (10) was 'given' a baby welsummer, Mags. The breeder said she was 'a bit slow coming on'. This was 4 weeks ago, I think she is about 10 weeks old, but is just a guess.
She is still bald around her back end, just a few tail feathers developing, I found chicken lice on her 2 weeks ago and have treated them, keeping very close eye on her, the eggs in the base of her feathers have not hatched seem to be falling out now.
I also 'think' I found a worm in her poo, 3'' (long thin spagetti with pointy ends) possibly round worm.
She is very - very thin, her wings droop, very active always eating.
I have treated her with panacur for 3 days now as had some in. I have ordered flubervet, should I switch to this can continue treating her. If so for how long.
I am aware that worms and lice will cause the problems she appears to have.
Is there anything else I can do to help her?
My poor lad will be devastated if she doesnt make it.

Feedback appreciated Jo

Hi Jo40

Since you have been worming her have you spotted any worms in her poops?
If no then I'd stop giving it her and wait till you get the flubenvet

How have you been giving her the panacur?

What are you feeding her at the moment?

Sarah :)

just to add, some apple cider vinegar (from feed stores, the unrefined stuff :)) will help her digestion, (start of on 10ml per litre for 2 weeks then up to 25ml) you might want to switch her feed back to chick crumb to give the extra protein. Keep on top of the lice with diatom powder, keep on with the worming and she should be fine! Good luck! :)

Thanks for replies
Hi Sarah
Yes I have seen a worm, pretty sure it was Maggies poo.
I am giving them all Panacur in the syrup form, mixing it with rice/pasta. the flubenvet has arrived today, would it be ok to switch to this now, if so how long should i dose them for.
She is just on layers pellets and a bit of corn - and as many cherrys as she can find!

Thanks Foxy will get some Apple cider and crumbs.
Her back end is bald apart from a few short tail feathers so it is very easy to check for nasties. Are feather mite easily visible?
Thanks again Jo
