New girls, should I keep them seperate?
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:21 »
Hello everyone
Its been a while since I last posted, well months!!  My 4 girls are doing really well and I have decided to expand my little hen family.  Im off to collect 2 or 3 new girls today, a buff orpington and either an araucana or shetland (or both !!!).  When I added my 2 light sussex to the marans we just waited untill night time and popped them in the coop, they had the odd scuffle but that was all. Since then I have read that most people keep newbies seperate, so the question is, should I put them straight in tonight or use my spare house?  Then how do I go about introductions?  The others are in a walk in run and free range every day.

Sorry for long post, thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers

Hi we mixed ours straight away, as we had no choice, but it took three weeks for things to settle down, still get an odd nip now and then, especially if there's food about but things are ok now think it will be for everyone  ::)

The other reason for keeping them seperate is to see if they develop any bugs or colds at all. U dont want your old chicks getting ill becasue the new ones have brought something in.

Even though I expect the place you are getting the new ones from is excellent you never know thigs can come out through the stress of the move. Perhaps a week or two apart and then put them in at night like you did last time.

Up to you really.
