planting winter cabbages after spring/summer crop
« on: September 14, 2009, 17:59 »
Hi
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am confused about this one and crop rotation.

Can you plant winter/spring cropping cabbages in the same patch immediately following the spring/summer cabbage harvest?

This seems the logical thing to do and then follow the normal rotation plan?

I had that thought and decided to put them somewhere else just in case. But maybe someone with longer experience will tell you it's ok.
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

I have done in the past....just try to avoid the very same spot that the last cabbage came out of, and don't forget to top up with blood fish and bone or growmore.
My reasoning was that if it's the cabbage rotation then it stays that way till next spring :)

Suppose it depends whether your rotation starts now or in the spring? Im going to put cabbages and caulis in their new 2010 spot, but only cos Im still waiting for the brussels to finish!

I have been growing some seedlings in my shed. they are approx 3 inches high but don't look particularly strong. As I'm running out of space in my shed I was wondering if I'm ok to plant these out now.I've just ordered some fleece so can cover them up to protect against frost. Should I do this now or leave them to grow a bit more?

I replant cabbages in the same bed useing a bit of growmore (winter cabbage went in when summer cabbage came out.) at the moment early sprouts.kale and winter cabbage are in the 09 bed and PSB , late sprouts and spring greens are in the 2010 bed. so I suppose my end of season is about march/april

Does everyone do this or is it just one of those threads where everyone agrees with each other and the rest don't post?

I'm not that experienced, but I'd assumed once you'd grown a batch of brassicas in a bed and considering they're such 'hungry feeders' that you'd have drained that patch of the essential nutrients for brassicas so you ought to move on to a different crop.

Am I the only one doing that?

They may not be getting enough light in the shed, brassicas need to be outside. Get them outside & let them strengthen up a bit before planting out.

They are very hardy and will not need protecting from frost. only pigeons in my case!

As regards rotation, I never follow like with like, even in the same yezr.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They will soon strengthen up when given a bit of room and light. Protect from pigeons as DD says - our can strip yer cabbage in a few minutes.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I think that people do add more nutrients and avoid planting in exactly the same 'hole' as the previous cabbage. It's just a way to stay in your rotation plan if you have a very small plot :)
Of course those with space can avoid doing this...Lucky them :D

I generally grow my spring cabbage, caulis where my new potatoes used to live
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Like DD, I never follow like with like, even when using blood-fish-and-bone or growmore..
Luckily, I have just enough room to be able to rotate my veg.
