What to feed yound veg plants
« on: April 10, 2009, 12:00 »
All my peas, Broad Beans etc are now potted on in the greenhouse but the growth is a bit slow. Would it be ok to give everything water with some dilute seaweed as I know this is very good for growth or should I use something else like Tomato feed ?

I don't know about broad beans, but peas don't need feed.  If they get an excess they will make leaf, rather than pods.

I'd be thinking about hardening them off & getting them outside.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Point to remember is "feed the soil, not the plant".

Sea-weed preparations are more like multivitamins for plants - lots of the things they only need a little bit of, rather than the bulk of their diet.  If the plants look a bit sorry for themselves, especially if they start to get slightly yellowish leaves, I'd splash a little fertiliser around (non-organic or organic as you choose), but remember little and often is better than one big dollop, much of which will get washed away before the plants can take it up.

Tomato feed is intended for things that are setting fruit (so might help with legumes, especially as they're normally alright for nitrogen).  For leafy things and for most root crops you want fertilisers meant for the job.
