My black tuscan kale has been disappointing this year. Scant pickings and now going to seed. Lots of sideshoots that are about to flower. Has anybody tried eating these like PSB, or are they not worth the bother?

Yes, they are good to eat if the flower buds have not opened. Any overwintering brassicas that are producing flower buds, are all good to eat. I am using my brussel shoots this way at the moment.

I agree and even think that kale and brussels flowering shoots taste every bit as good as PSB.
 They look a bit stringy but can be used quite long -around 6inches.
A good use for poor or 'blown' sprouts if you can afford to leave them in a bit longer
