yippee.....got an allotment!
« on: March 20, 2009, 18:12 »
Having grown veg in our back garden for a couple of years, I put my name down for an allotment last year and have just been given a good size plot (40 foot by 80 foot).

Even better, it's in my village and a 5 minute walk from home!

Loads to do but being quite sad, I love taking a horrible mess and digging it over.....the kids love it as there is a big tree to climb and loads of open space and they have their own little growing patch.

It's been great fun planning what we can plant, building raised beds and salivating (hopefully) over a bumper crop.

How long before the excitement wears off?

Hopefully it won't wear off - especially if the whole family is involved.
Enjoy it and good luck!

Had mine a year and the excitement hasn't worn off yet.  I love the anticipation of what to grow and how well stuff will do.  enjoy the process probably even more than the actual eating, though that is good too!

It's very exciting this time of year, wondering how things will grow, and what the season will bring, weather wise etc., ::) I can't believe how much I've actually got done over the last 3 weekends. My patch is looking pretty good at the moment. I planted 5 rows of spuds in 1 1/2 hours tonight, and I'm sitting here feeling pretty satisfied with what I've achieved! tomorrow i've got cauliflowers to sow, and possibly put in a row of early carrots. Tis the best time of year IMHO. ;) :)

I'm now in my third growing season on my plot, and I'm still enjoying it.

I'm the same as all of you, I just love to see what I can cultivate and grow with success, or not!  Even though I've lost a whole tray of cabbages, it doesn't put me off, I'll just grow another tray.  Its part and parcel of nature, some make it, some don't. ::)

My only problem is that when we get sunny days, as in this week, and I'm stuck at work in the office, my mind is not on my job, but what I could be doing on the allotment :(.  Even now, if I lost my job tomorrow, I don't think I'd cry over it.  Now to me, that's enjoyment. :)

Anyway, me and my hubby are off to the allotment as we're going to rotavate it.  Its been dug over and left over the winter, and now I'm preparing the ground properly.  I've already dug in my early carrots and parsnips, and I've put in my vine in the greenhouse.

I can see green leaves appearing on the gooseberries and the rhubarb is coming up nicely.  Its soooo relaxing. 8)
