Chitting potatoes and planting up
« on: February 18, 2009, 17:01 »
We have the potatoes chitting in the garage,  the neighbour today said I should cut in half the potatoes that have a bit growing at each end so I get double the amount of spuds to plant according to them.  What are the views on this here?

I've read about doing this, but haven't tried it. I would worry about disease getting into the tuber and spreading.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

If you do it you must allow the cut to dry and heal before planting. As long as each piece has a shoot they will produce a plant.

It used to be done quite a lot but some of the seed was too big and there was enough energy in each half to produce a robust plant.

Todays seed is much better graded.

I think it was done a lot in the past when seed potatoes were relatively expensive but now they're so cheap I'd not bother. :)

I was thinking just that as I waited for the replies to open Digalotty.  Have not a clue as to what type the potatoes are the shop that sells them (green grocers)  sells the  seed potatoes, no idea as to the type!! :(
