Hello from new place!
« on: December 29, 2008, 16:57 »
Hi all, so I originally signed up here to start learning about veg growing before moving to new place and getting a garden...  Well am here!

Ground is quite clay-y so am thinking will need some raised beds, and was thinking of putting them on the right hand side (where the wooden fence is as you see it), is south-east facing, sun rises on the other side (where the bushy thing is) i believe.

Anything obvious from the terrible pics that anyone has pointers on?

Just looking at the shadows of the trees and hedge, I think you might have problem with shade when they are in leaf.  I'm only guessing here (a photo can only tell you so much   ) but without the hedge or some other screen, I think the garden might be exposed to wind - that is very open ground in the background.  Otherwise I think it is a prime piece of land just waiting to be dug over and planted up   :D

Thanks for reply - Yea about the shade, was thinking about that, was hoping it's due to how blooming low the sun is at the moment, the other end is far more shaded in the mornings, this pic was take mid-late afternoon.  Have yet to be hit by heavy winds so far (unusual for this end of the world) but when we do I will have a nosearound and see what happens.

Looks gorgeous, and good luck!  There are lots of good strategies to amending clay-ish soil, so you may not even need the raised beds.  Keep us posted!

What a gorgeous place, your very lucky. As for the clay, mine was very clayie but with work you'll get there.
As my dad always says, " If weeds will grow there, plants will"!
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.
