who ate my broad beans?
« on: May 18, 2006, 15:33 »
It was actually sunny this morning so I ventured out to the lottie only to find that my broad beans have lovely frilly leaves. Looks like something has gone round each leaf edge nibbling as it went. What is doing this? Could it be ants as there seems to be quite  few on the stems. No black fly or anyhting obvious. Will they be OK with frilly leaves? As no one else in the family likes broad beans they are not at all sympathetic about this.

I've got several different things in and out of the greenhouse that look a bit 'frilly' Nitiram, but is seems like only the lower leaves, as the middles are growing, those leaves look okay.  I'm not keen on broad beans, but am trying them this year for OH.  Jake sent me some butter bean seeds in exchange for a bit of comfrey, and they are for me!!

It won't be ants. I expect they will be OK when a little bigger they can shake off most little attackers.
My favourite vegetable, by the way.
Nutritious and tasty - great in white sauce with bacon, young ones in salads, in stews, on sandwiches/ OK, the last bit isn't true :)

This happened quite badly to my broadie seedlings last year, and one of the old boys suggested a puff of Derris dust after rain (so it sticks to the leaves). This seemed to do the trick, he said it was bean weevil.

I eat my broadies like mangetout, pods and all, when they are the size of my little finger

I now reckon slugs may be the problem.  Writing it up for my diary now.
