Hi i was just wondering what the hottist stage of the chilli is. First it goes green, then black, then red. Ive eaten red chillis but not the other 2.

Somebody told me the smaller the chilli the hotter, Is that right?

I think the smaller and greener the hotter it is - certainly the case with mine...

Most chillis will be hotter when they're ripe which will be the final colour they end up as, with many this is red, some yellow, some purple/black.  Green is generally not the hottest point.

The smaller (and thinner walled) varieties tend to be hotter I think, rather than young fruits.

we grew the very long ones (joe something or other?) they were very mild at first but have got much hotter these last few weeks, only two turned red, lots turned black and most stayed green...the green ones and the black ones seem just as hot as the two that turned red...make sense of that if you can  :?
