Tasteless tomatoes!
« on: October 20, 2008, 13:11 »
Hi all! This was my first year of growing fruit and veg. I had three tomato plants in a growbag in a plastic greenhouse. They were in a sunny spot and seemed to do well.

............but they were spongy and almost tasteless. Where did I go wrong? Did I overwater them?

They were Roma and Outdoor girl and I did feed them. Any ideas?

I haven tried those varieties, so not too sure on their flavour, but overwatering an definately be  a cause.

Just a thought, did you keep them in the fridge before you tasted them ? the fridge ruins the flavour and can make them mushy.  Like peopod I haven't tried those varieties, I grew Gardeners Delight this year and they were very tasty, only a few left and I'm dreading buying shop bought ones

Yes, I believe that overwatering can cause loss of flavour.  I grew gardeners delight this year and they were pretty tasteless, but my black cherry toms tasted fantastic.  Also, I grew sungella last year and they also tasted really good.
Cheese makes everything better.

My sub artic were like that won't be doing them again.  My gardeners delight and moneymaker on the other hand perfect.  Are you sure its not the variety of tomato at fault.  I haven't grown Roma or outdoor girl myself, so don't know what they are usually like.

What I am trying to say is you would think all Toms were nice but after growing the sub artics and reading on other forums that other peeps were not impressed with them maybe not all Toms come out as wonderful as expected.

Also googling those two varieties one site said Roma was mushy because it is for cooking rather than eating raw and another said if mushy they could be over ripe.
